Parenting Class Description: Positive Discipline is more than just a parenting method--it's a whole approach to human development for adults and children that focuses on solutions! Based on current brain research, and rooted in Adlerian Psychology, this perspective is developmentally appropriate, experientially engaging and culturally conscious.

In this interactive, supportive program you will learn methods that can bring more joy into the home and give you a sense of accomplishment. The Positive Discipline model is aimed at developing mutually respectful relationships. It teaches adults to employ kindness and firmness at the same time, and is neither punitive nor permissive.

Parents, teachers and caregivers of children of all ages and abilities are welcome. This 8-week live, virtual workshop runs Monday evenings from 7:30 to 9 pm starting January 9, 2023 with our last class landing on February 27, 2023. The cost of this workshop is $80.00 per household and can be paid in weekly installments of $10/week.You will receive the ZOOM link for class the day before the class begins.

Parents are encouraged to purchase the pre-class materials that include the book Positive Discipline by Jane Nelsen, Ed.D, tool cards and workbook: The cost of the package is $34.99 at this time and does not include shipping. Purchasing these materials is completely optional but they do help supplement and reinforce the material we will be learning and discussing.

This class is being facilitated by Shimila Keenum, Certified Positive Discipline Parent Educator. I am a mother and step-mother (aka Shim-mother as one of my bonus sons calls me). I have a Masters Degree in Social Work, I am a Registered Nurse and have a holistic counseling practice where I provide psychotherapy, mindfulness workshops and parenting workshops. I have been using Positive Discipline techniques since my daughter was very young. I remember times feeling so lost and uncertain during the time in my life when I was a single parent raising a child while trying to put myself through nursing school. Whenever I would just pick up my Positive Discipline book and even just turn to a random page, I would feel instantly soothed like I had just talked to my best friend who validated me and acknowledged my challenges. To boot, I would feel more calm, centered and more able to practice the skills the book was teaching me. I look forward to helping you on your parenting journey!
