Parenting Class Description:  Jane Nelsen and Lynn Lott, creators of the Positive Discipline approach, say, "Children don't come with a set of directions and effective parenting skills are learned, not inherited." Teaching parenting using Positive Discipline helps parents get into the world of children to discover what really works and what doesn't - what children are really thinking, feeling and deciding based on their parent's parenting methods. In this workshop, parents practice their new skills through role playing and experience encouraging feedback as they learn how difficult it can be to change old habits but how rewarding it is to see the long term benefits of raising more resourced, responsible, capable young people!

This workshop is for parents, teachers and caregivers of children of all ages and abilities are welcome.

HERE'S JUST SOME OF WHAT YOU'LL LEARN OVER THIS 6 WEEK CLASS

How to break the code of misbehavior

Children didn't come with a manual, but let me tell ya, The Mistaken Goal Chart is the closest thing I have ever found to one and it hasn't failed me yet!

How to inspire intrinsically motivated cooperation and other harmonious behaviors in our children.

We all hope to raise children who will do the right thing even when no one is looking. Well we can start working on that now!

You will spend time identifying the life skills you want for your children

We will actually take the very challenges you are facing right now and explore how to take these hidden gems of opportunities to guide our children towards the life skills and characteristics you want and hope for them!

You will learn that ultimately you are NOT ALONE and that together we can work towards being the best (not perfect) adult in our children's lives. These classes can be so validating when we hear how others struggle with similar challenges. That common humanity alone can give us fuel to persevere!

You will learn the core principle that underlies Positive Discipline - how to meet the REAL NEED that helps children to develop into responsible, respectful, resourceful, and happy young people that know how capable they are.

And let's not forget why you came here! You will leave every class with simple and effective Positive Discipline tools that you can begin utilizing right away! These principles and tools can be used preventatively and as empowering interventions.

This class is being facilitated by Shimila Keenum, Certified Positive Discipline Parent Educator. I am a mother and step-mother (aka Shim-mother as one of my bonus sons calls me). I have a Masters Degree in Social Work, I am a Registered Nurse and have a holistic counseling practice where I provide psychotherapy, mindfulness workshops and parenting workshops. I have been using Positive Discipline techniques since my daughter was very young. I remember times feeling so lost and uncertain during the time in my life when I was a single parent raising a child while trying to put myself through nursing school. Whenever I would just pick up my Positive Discipline book and even just turn to a random page, I would feel instantly soothed like I had just talked to my best friend who validated me and acknowledged my challenges. To boot, I would feel more calm, centered and more able to practice the skills the book was teaching me. I look forward to helping you on your parenting journey!
