Positive Discipline and Montessori

Positive Discipline weaves the teaching of social-emotional skills and character development into the fabric of each and every school day. In addition to specific lessons, adults model the skills they are teaching and integrate them into the discipline system used by the school. It is a program that encourages the development of healthy social and other life skills in a manner that is mutually respectful to adults and children. Positive Discipline uses both kindness and firmness at the same time and is neither punitive nor permissive. Interpersonal and intrapersonal skills, judgment, and the ability to respond to the limits and consequences of everyday life with responsibility and integrity are emphasized by our staff and administration in their daily student interactions.

Character Development

Character is sometimes defined as doing what is right because it is the right thing to do, what one does when no one is watching. Positive Discipline builds character by supporting intrinsic motivation: the development of an internal locus of control. Students work collaboratively to develop communities which align with the school’s core values without the use of incentives or rewards. They develop a sense of social interest and awareness of actions that benefit the common good. In this model, adults do less managing and more leading.
