Past Questions Past Questions

I have a 5-month-old daughter. I am presently trying to get her to sleep through the night, and have read that I should just let her cry. Well, I have been fairly successful at this, but I am having a hard time letting her cry through that only 4:00 a.m. feeding. It seems like we have got into this rut that I can't bring myself to stop. I am told that at this age they can go 12 hours without eating. Is this true? I guess I should mention that I am breast feeding and just introduced solids. We also have a problem at nap time. When she gets overtired, she cries herself into hysterics, like she is in pain or something. HELP!!!!!!

I have mixed feelings about this. I would prefer that you just enjoy the 4:00 a.m. feeding--but that may not be your preference. Some babies go 12 hours, and other don't. I sometimes recommend letting children cry it out, but so far I'm not convinced that your case calls for this. I recommend it for older children who are obviously manipulating. I don't think that is true for a baby who sleeps until 4:00 a.m. Have you read "The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding" by La Leche League? That was my bible when I was nursing.

I also suggest you get a copy of our book, "Positive Discipline for Preschoolers." This book actually covers birth through preschool, and covers many developmental issues. There is also a chapter on temperament that helps parents stop expecting their children to be like other children.

I think the answer to your second question is obvious. Arrange your schedule so she gets her nap before she becomes overtired.
