Weaning baby from using bottle for sleep
My baby is six-and-a-half months old. He has two teeth now and I do not want them to be rotted by milk. He only takes a bottle when he wants a nap or it is time to go to bed. How do I wean him from this and still make sure he gets enough nutrients and sleep?
Who told you milk would rot his teeth? Is that a medical or dental opinion? I don't know about this, but I do know that weaning has never been easy for the weanor or the weanee. In our book,"Positive Discipline for Preschoolers," we talk about a natural weaning time. If you watch for it,you will notice sometime between 9 months to 12 months that your baby will not want a bottle(or the breast). Most mothers keep pushing the bottle (or breast) until the baby gives up and takes it. Before this time, the bottle or breast is a need--not a habit. It becomes a habit soon after this time. Unless your doctor or dentist tells you differently, don't worry about rotting teeth. Instead watch for the time when you baby loses interest. This is the time to introduce the cup--if you haven't already done so.
I think you would enjoy the Preschooler book, which can be ordered by calling 1-800-456-7770. It actually covers birth through preschool, and is full of suggestions about how to help your child become a capable person.
